I was about 30 years old and my first-born daughter was probably about 5 months old. We left England around that time to go live in the wonderful Knysna Forest in South Africa. One perfect evening my wife and I were chatting in bed with the little one between us. A very light hearted chat with the odd giggle, playing with our new born baby then, SMACK!! I get up to go to the toilet as it feels like I have a case of diarrhoea and need to get there quickly. My legs crumble from under me and I struggle to stand up again as they feel as if they are made from jelly. My wife immediately gets this look of shock on her face as she has never seen this before. I make it to the toilet and sure as heck it’s diarrhoea. Whilst in the bathroom I continue to got from hot to cold and my muscles start to spasm. I finish what I need to do and try to make my way back to the bedroom on legs that feel frozen and like jelly the same time . Does any of this sound familiar?

I’m now shaking uncontrollably and find myself in the featal position clinging onto my wifes hand for dear life with the thoughts of death on the horizon. A strong feeling that I’m about to die. My wife is terrified. What can I do for you babe she says? I can hardly talk as my teeth are chattering away uncontrollably.

I try to follow my breath as I was once tought by my yoga teacher. It’s hard as I’m hyperventalating but my wife helps me through it. I’m exhausted. My breathing begins to normalize slowly but surely. I can’t talk. I’m exhausted. I fall into a peaceful sleep to arrise normally in the morning.

I need to find out what this is and I do. It’s a panic disorder and treatment is needed fast.

This first extreme case of a panic attack scared the life out of me and it would’ve continued to be debillatating if I didn’t seek treatment for this panic disorder. Yes, yours might not be as bad or in fact it might be worse. Mine did not occur at any particular time or event but for some people it does perhaps whilst driving in a car or on a plane or in a shopping mall or even whilst socializing. For the past several years I have been taking 80mg Nadolol (Corgard) twice daily for migraine prophylaxis. I understand that Propranolol is sometimes prescribed specifically for the treatment of social anxiety and wonder whether I should be considering it instead of Nadolol.

I take Nadolol to help my blood pressure. I have taken Inderal in the past. I have found that Nadolol helps my heart better than the Inderal. I don’t feel my heart beating as much as I did when I took the Inderal. For me, the Nadolol seems more helpful. I hope you will be doing better. Good Luck.

How do doctors diagnois this and what is the treatment for this disorder? Sorry, if the spelling is off.

Most panic disorders are easy to spot, I used to get them a lot and hardly left my home for 2-1/2 years. Mostly you get a feeling of dread, your heart starts to pound and you think your having a heart attack, your palms sweat and you want to just run. This is called flight or fight and its instilled in us.
Its all over in a minute or 2 and you wonder what brought it on, it could have been a red light, too much out in the open, too many people that you feel confined… too many triggers to name here.
I limit my personal space but I can go to the store and drive locally; if I have to go anywhere else I have someone drive me. You can get on medication I know Paxil works for some people, they can drive and don’t have those feelings of dread but I don’t like taking pills.

Hi! I have been suffering with panic attacks for 29 years and know how you feel. My mom got the whole series and spent alot of money. She said that it helped,but she must still take her medication. I was in a study with John Hopkins University for panic attacks. The government is trying to make a bill that proves it is a physical illness like diabetes. Then be called a physical illness. It is a loss of serotonin in the brain and must be replaced synthetically. I take prozac or other SSI inhibitors to help balance the brain hormones and chemicals. It runs in families and after death, people with panic attacks have shown small valve heart problems within the autopsy. It helps to reduce stress, meditate, and use biofeedback. It is not just in our mind. Sometimes, psychotherapy works or talking with someone else . But, it doesn’t help me or many others to just listen to tapes that tell us how to eliminate stress or to do what scares us, like a phobia. I did have a hard time coming out of the house for 2 years and had to do what I feared. I fight to be normal all the time. I try not to dwell on problems. I try and try. In church history, it was known as the ailment that got you closer to God because you realize we have no control over our lives in a panic attack. I really got into my church and religion (Catholic) and that helped the most. I read many history books and theology books. I have a hard time sleeping so I read and pray. I help others with this affliction and find that we can use this for the good. It’s a gift from God to keep us from getting arrogant. Oh well–I now have my mom’s tapes and am glad I didn’t buy them.. Hi, I was wondering if anybody knows if there’s any over the counter supplements that can be used to treat Panic Attacks and/or depression? I would love to discover some sort of supplements or medicine that would help prevent social anxieties specifically. Maybe I should find some sort of breathing exercises to help keep my heart rate down.

Sometimes I have them all day long.

I had Panic Attacks for about 5 yrs. That was about 15 yrs. ago now and my best advice is to meet it head on. I know that sounds like the last thing that you want to do. I always felt like I was going to pass out or have a heart attack and everybody would be standing over me looking at me. I hated crowds, and standing in line to a movie or whatever. I did talk to a professional about it but I really do not feel that he did any good for me. One day I just said with a friend at first that I am tired of this and went out and faced my issues. I kept saying to myself standing in line I’m not going to pass out it’s all in my head and if I do too bad I will get over it. Nana, my former nanny, is suffering from general anxiety disorder. She worries about every little thing – dirty laundry, picnics, allowances, family gatherings… whatever. It’s not bad to get worried sometimes but she’s overdoing it. She worries too much. She always seems scared even if there’s nothing to be scared about. She’s also having problems with her health. She always feel dizzy and nauseous. Her head aches often and her heart always pound twice as fast. Please tell me the treatments for GAD. I really want to help Nana. I know it’s hard to live a life filled with tension and worries.

The two main treatments for a general anxiety disorder are medication and psychotherapy. The type of medication used in treating GAD is an anti-depressant. As in name suggests, an anti-depressant fights depression. It tries to counter all negative thoughts like distress, agony and anxiety. One of the newer types of anti-depressant is the SSRI or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. Even if it causes nausea and sexual dysfunction in some cases, SSRI is considered very helpful for it enhances the mood by manipulating neurotransmitters.

Two types of helpful therapies are behavioral therapy and cognitive therapy. Behavioral therapy aims to lessen or to eliminate the behavior brought by the disorder. In your Nana’s case, it’s the anxiety. Through behavioral therapy, she’ll be taught how to relax in times of worry-filled situations and how to breathe well to fight hyperventilation. Cognitive therapy, on the other hand, aims to discover the connection between your Nana’s mental state and her anxiety.
She’ll be taught how to deal with unwanted thoughts full of anxiety to prevent GAD symptoms. It will help her fight the disorder.

I have many many Anxiety Attacks a day and it gets worse day by day and I really dont want to be put on meds. Is there any natural way to go?

Hi, I’m sorry you have to go through this horrible ordeal. I have a terrible history of anxiety attacks. Mine come at times of stress. Before you rush in to looking for a ‘rescue remedy’, we should find out the ‘root’ of your problem so that we can rid of your anxiety forever. What triggered the first attack, do you remember? The best trick to ridding your anxiety is knowing that there is nothing to be afraid of these attack. You will not die. If you tell yourself that you are not scared of the attack, and breathe slowly, don’t fight it, let it pass, than it will get better in time, trust me. You are getting the attack because you are afraid of it and you are trying to fight it.

Don’t fight it, go outside, sit down and take long deep breaths.
There is a special way to breathing. Make sure you are breathing down to your navel and not jus your chest. Breathing to only your chest is what creates anxiety. if you learn patience and meditation, your symptom will go away within a minute or two and you will not get an attack.
Just sit with your head down, close your eyes, breath very slowly, the slower you breathe, the calmer your mind will be. Remember that you are causing these attacks which means you do have the power to stop it. Practice your breathing as often as possible so you are prepared when your symptoms come back.

Whatever you do avoid meds. Do NOT take them. I found that meditation works instantly and there is no side effects, only benefits.

And even if you do rid of the attacks, it is important you continue practice your breathing every single day. I took it for granted I will never get them again but I did and it was horrible. So please practice your breathing everyday so you are always aware and prepared.

It depends on what kind of set up you are in – full day, one hour…?

In the beginning there is some getting introduced talking and gathering basic and background information.

There will be some aspects of teaching to help you learn the ideas involved in cognitive behavioral therapy.

It should not be very scary or anything like that. You may feel a bit shy or uncomfortable, that would be pretty normal for anyone.

Just go in with an open mind and an attitude of being willing to learn and grow. You are there to do some things that will improve your life and make it easier to be in the world.

im 30 years old i have all these, ive been sent for psychotherapy, but my symptoms are really impairing my ability to function, just leave my apartment….my psychiatrist wont perscribe meds because he said there addictive.

so im wondering what i should do?
is psychotherapy enough?
what is the correct care, treatment & support i should be recieving?

i dont feel my mental health teams doing enough to help, but at the same time, im not sure what kind of treatment or support i should be asking them for..

ive had these problems since 16, the system has failed me and ive never gotten the right help up until recently, when they assigned me a mental health team.

Hey. ok….

First: Find a new shrink. Medications can help the symptoms of your illnesses. For example, anti-aniexty medications can help with your feelings of fear and nervousness. Medications can’t solve the problems, but they can reduce symptomology.

Second: Try getting into INTENSIVE therapy with someone who will see you at least 2 times a week. If you can not get someone who will do intensive pyschodynamic or interpersonal therapy, look for someone who does DBT. DBT is specifically for Borderline Personality Disorder and consists of intensive individual therapy and group therapy.

Third: Read some books on the illnesses you have. Get all the information you can to help you identify your symptoms and behaviors.

It is VERY hard. I have some of the same illnesses and it is a struggle every day. Just know there are others out there that have similar troubles, so you are not alone.
