Treatment for anxiety disorder?
ByI was just diagnosed with having an anxiety disorder and Panic Attacks but have really been dealing with it for years. I’m suppose to start going to see a therapist later this week ( I want to try that before I start taking meds). I hear a lot of people say anxiety can be caused by a chemical imbalance in your brain, so I was wandering how therapy helps people with anxiety disorder if its a chemical imbalance? Also, has anyone here just had therapy for their anxiety disorder without taking meds? did it work?

A therapist can help you learn what your triggers are so that you can recognize what it is before your in a full blown anxiety attack. I take something called GABA for anxiety, it’s an herbal remedy. It’s awesome! Regular meds just changed my personality, but don’t go by just what I’m saying. Lots of people have been helped by going on meds, I’m just one of them.
Good Luck!

All the therapy in the world wont help a chemical imbalance in your brain. However it WILL teach you alternative ways to deal with situations that aggravate your symptoms. Think of it this way. An alcoholic will Always be an alcoholic, learning to avoid bars and situations where one could slip is important. probably more so because there is no pill I know of that will "cure" an alcoholic.
That being said we are at a disadvantage as well. We need to get around. When crowds can be as frightening as being trapped in a burning building you want to get out as soon as you can, when someone wants to hold you back and keep you talking you feel panic setting in only they wont see the "fire" untill its to late.
If you have the correct tools to navigate those crowds tailored to your situation you will most likely do better. in the situation Iv explained, planning an escape ahead of time, or choosing times that are less crowded are good tools to help. I promise you will learn more.
your brain MAY have been conditioned to the responses you are dealing with today. if that’s the case you MAY be able to recondition it.
As for medication. think of it as a tool to recover. My meds remind me of skittles, there’s so many. I have stopped taking two and am weaning off another soon WITH MY DOCTOR’S HELP. you may only need one or two meds. use them if it’s prescribed. remember Think of them as tool’s to recovery. be sure you let your therapist know your feeling’s on this subject. In the end you may end up needing to take one or two any way.
By the way 4 years ago I would barely leave my house, Today I am a Commander in a nationally recognized organization. I give speeches on a regular basis to between 30 and 130 people or more. I work on projects that have me introducing my self to total strangers who on a regular biases give me free products, services, donations and more. And I often write to a news letter that is read by thousand’s, 80% of whom know who I am and how to contact me where ever I am. You may not go to the extreme that I have, but From where you are right now, thing’s will get better.
Good luck
